Dhyana or Meditation
Dhyana means worship, or profound and abstract religious meditation. It is perfect contemplation. It involves concentration upon a point of focus with the intention of knowing the truth about it. The concept holds that when one focuses their mind in concentration on an object the mind is transformed into the shape of the object.
Mudra or Finger/Hand Gestures
A Mudra (Sanskrit word meaning sign or seal) is a gesture or position, usually of the hands, that locks and guides energy flow and reflexes to the brain.
Mantra or Chants
Mantra is the use of sound to affect consciousness; man means mind and trang means wave or projection. Everything in this world, down to the subatomic level, is in constant motion, vibrating. The denser a material, the more slowly it moves; often the vibration is so slow or so fast that we can’t notice it with our direct senses. This vibration is pure energy.
Dhristi or Eye Focus
A drishti (view or gaze) is a specific focal point that is employed during meditation or while holding a yoga posture. The ancient yogis discovered that where our gaze is directed our attention naturally follows, and that the quality of our gazing is directly reflected in the quality of our mental thoughts.
Asana or Posture
Asana is defined as “posture or pose;” its literal meaning is “seat.” Originally, there was only one asana– a stable and comfortable pose for prolonged seated meditation. More than just stretching and toning the physical body, the yoga poses open the nadis (energy channels) and chakras(psychic centers) of the body. Yoga poses also purify and help heal the body, as well as control, calm and focus the mind. The different categories of postures produce different energetic, mental, emotional and physical effects.
Bandhas or Locks
The Bandhas – Locks are gateways to developing core strength, sensitivity, and subtlety and are fundamental to Kundalini Yoga. The practice of the three body locks bring both depth and effectiveness to yoga practice.
Breath Work or Pranayam
Pranayama is the conscious practice of managing the breath, which is the source of our prana, or vital life force or Chi.
