Yoga: The Spiritual Airplane of the Soul

Introduction

Yoga is more than exercise – it is a vehicle for the soul. Just as an airplane lifts us off the ground and carries us across great distances, the disciplined practice of yoga elevates our consciousness and transports us beyond limiting patterns. Each component of the yogic tradition serves as an essential part of this inner aircraft, preparing us for flight and guiding us on our journey home.

Preparing for take‑off

  • The body is the plane – Our physical form is the vessel we travel in. Asanas (postures) strengthen and align it so that prana can flow freely.
  • The breath is the fuel – Pranayama is the life force that powers our ascent. Smooth, deep breathing feeds the engine of transformation.
  • Ethics are the wings – Yama and Niyama (moral observances) provide stability and direction. Without integrity and self‑discipline, our journey will veer off course.
  • Attention is the pilot – Dharana (concentration) and Dhyana (meditation) guide the plane. A scattered mind is like a distracted pilot; focused awareness keeps us on path.

The 7 seats on board

Ancient yogis mapped the subtle body as seven major chakras along the spine. Each is like a seat on the airplane where a passenger (a quality of consciousness) rides:

  1. Muladhara – Root; stability and survival.
  2. Svadhisthana – Sacral; flow and creativity.
  3. Manipura – Solar plexus; power and will.
  4. Anahata – Heart; love and compassion.
  5. Vishuddha – Throat; expression and truth.
  6. Ajna – Third eye; intuition and insight.
  7. Sahasrara – Crown; unity and transcendence.

By balancing these energy centres, we ensure every passenger is comfortable, creating a harmonious internal environment for flight.

Navigational tools

  • Mantra is the compass – Repetition of sacred sounds keeps us oriented toward the Divine.
  • Bandhas are the locks – Energy locks like Mula Bandha and Jalandhara Bandha stabilise internal pressure, much like valves on an aircraft.
  • Satsang is the crew – Travelling with supportive community keeps us accountable and inspired.

In‑flight challenges

Turbulence comes in the form of old habits, doubt and impatience. When fear arises, return to the breath. When fatigue sets in, remember your intention. Accept that growth sometimes feels uncomfortable, just as take‑off requires thrust against gravity.

Final landing

The purpose of this spiritual airplane is to bring us back to our true Self – the state of union where individual and universal consciousness are one. By showing up on the mat with dedication and humility, you board this internal flight each day. Trust the process, honour the disciplines and enjoy the view as your soul soars.
