Are Abducens Training and EMDR the Same?

Short answer: Not quite — but they overlap.

  • Abducens training focuses on neuromuscular and sensory-motor integration — strengthening the lateral rectus muscle via cranial nerve VI to improve balance, vision, and postural alignment.
  • EMDR, on the other hand, uses bilateral eye movements (and sometimes tapping or sound) to process emotional trauma by engaging the brain’s memory networks and emotional regulation systems.

So, while both involve eye movement, their intent and neural pathways are different.

🧠 Nerves Involved in EMDR

EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (left-right alternating input), which activates several key systems in the body:

1. Cranial Nerve III (Oculomotor)

Controls most of the eye’s motion and pupil dilation.

2. Cranial Nerve VI (Abducens)

Moves the eyes laterally (to the side). In EMDR, this nerve is often engaged during side-to-side gaze.

3. Cranial Nerve V (Trigeminal)

If tapping or facial stimulation is used.

4. Vagus Nerve (CN X)

Not directly part of eye movement, but often stimulated indirectly through relaxation during EMDR. This is part of the parasympathetic nervous system and helps bring emotional calm and a sense of safety.

EMDR may also engage interhemispheric communication — stimulating both hemispheres of the brain to allow reprocessing of traumatic memories that are “stuck” in isolated networks.

🔮 Spiritual Impacts of EMDR

EMDR can bring profound spiritual awakenings, even if its roots are clinical.

Here’s how:

🕊️ 1. Releasing Stored Trauma = Expanding Consciousness

EMDR helps clear emotional residue that blocks intuition, connection, and peace. This can lead to:

  • A deeper sense of inner freedom
  • Access to soul memories or spiritual truths
  • Greater alignment with one’s Higher Self

🌌 2. Heightened Awareness After Emotional Integration

As past pain is neutralized, many report:

  • Spontaneous mystical experiences
  • Lucid dreams or symbolic visions
  • A deepened relationship with their purpose

🛑 3. Detachment from False Identity

By processing trauma, EMDR dissolves egoic roles tied to pain (victim, controller, pleaser). This often mirrors spiritual growth practices aimed at disidentification from the conditioned self.

💎 4. EMDR as a Spiritual Initiation

Some consider EMDR a modern form of shamanic soul retrieval — a guided descent into stored pain to retrieve and reintegrate lost aspects of self.

✨ Final Thought

Eye movement is a powerful portal — whether for reorganizing the nervous system or liberating the soul.
The eyes are not just for seeing outward; they’re deeply connected to how we perceive, process, and embody reality.

Whether you’re strengthening your gaze to heal the body, or retraining it to heal the past — you’re reclaiming sovereignty over your inner and outer world.
